  • (Sep 04, 2016) The Nose, El Capitan The Nose. Trevor Violette, Cameron S. 3 days
Awesome time with Cam! El Cap Tower by 6p on Friday. A party of 3 Brits were there and had fixed to the top of the Boot. We used their lines to pass in the morning. I took the King Swing and made it on attempt #2. Was just a foot or two too high on the first go. Stayed at Camp V and fixed a pitch for the following day. Topped out at 3pm. What an amazing route!

  • (Jun 01, 2016) Triple Direct, El Capitan Southwest Face. Erik Sloan, Roger Putnam 07h:30mins
Oh so good cruising the Big Stone with Rog! Woot!
  • (Jun 2016) Gulf Stream, El Capitan Southeast Face. Neil Chelton (solo)
The first 2 'exfoliating' pitches can be avoided by climbing The Footstool and following discontinuous crack systems to join the middle of P4. P5-P7 weave an improbable line through a series of sharp death flakes and expanding cracks. 'Surfing' small blocks is compulsory for the next 10 ascents or so. After P7 the rock becomes more solid and follows some super awesome features. The pitches are hard and sustained (A3 to A4+) to the very final move. I reached the summit on day 16 with cracked ribs in an unfamiliar state of delirious exhaustion.

  • (Oct 27, 2015) West Face, El Capitan West Face. glenn douglass, Greg Coit 10h:15mins
Hiked in gear and bivied at the base of the route the night before with Greg Coit. With the days getting ever shorter, we woke at 5am and started climbing at 6am, with a final top out of the route at 4:30pm. We're happy with 10.5 hours, tho we could def do it faster knowing the route now. It's pretty wandery and theres lots ways to get off route. Def Heads Up!!! Even tho i climbed like crap, all in all was a great day on the big rock.
  • (Oct 27, 2015) Zodiac, El Capitan Southeast Face. Brandon Adams, Gena Wood 1 day
Gena fixed two pitches then took us to belay 5. I led from belay 5 to peanut in 8:30. Gena cruised to the top. Fun route. Great times shortfixing and climbing continuously through the circle. Hammerless.
  • (Oct 26, 2015) South Face, Washington Column South Face. Adam Freund (solo) 06h:09mins
Stopped time at top of YBW topo P11 (tree with slings) when I arrived the second time with all the gear and coiled ropes. Rappelled with one 70m rope using Skull Queen P7, 6 and 5 belay anchors. Left some quick links and tidied up some tat. ~10 hours CTC
  • (Oct 20, 2015) South Face, Washington Column South Face. Adam Freund (solo) 10h:51m:09secs
Solo IAD adventure. Scouting mission for future fun. Was able to rap from the top with one 70m rope, (followed South Face anchors, rap route, went over to Skull Queen P7, P6, and P5 anchors, and then back on SF). Some moderate swinging is required.
  • (Oct 20, 2015) The Prow, Washington Column East Face. glenn douglass, Greg Coit 09hours
Greg fixed to Belay 3 on anchorage ledge the day before. We took 1 hour to jug to anchorage and start leading.
  • (Oct 13, 2015) South Face, Washington Column South Face. Amy Bedinghaus, Cary Bedinghaus 2 days
    First big wall! Woot!
  • (Oct 11, 2015) Tangerine Trip, El Capitan Southeast Face. Tito krull, Christan Cattell and Conner Britts 5 days
My Second El Cap route and second wall ever, my partners first true big wall. good times! We decided to start on the first 4 pitches of Virgina to avoid the wild pendulums pitch. The line is very forced but is a great intro to the grade and the steep walls.
  • (Oct 10, 2015) Salathe, El Capitan Southwest Face. Adam Freund, Gina Edwards 5 days
Awesome route. Recreational pace. Pretty crowded. Day 1/2: Hauled to Heart and rapped down Day 2: Freeblast to Hollow Flake Ledge Day 3: To El Cap Spire Day 4: Second night on El Cap Spire waiting for the upper ledges to clear. Stellar bivy. Day 5: To Long Ledge. The Headwall is mind-blowing! Day 6: To summit in morning and in the Meadow by the afternoon
  • (Oct 09, 2015) Waterfall Route, El Capitan Southeast Face. Brandon Adams, Joe Marley 11h:22mins
Cruising up the Waterfall Route with Joe was great. Was good to have tons of fun after so much work went into it. Speed record!! 4 hours to 8. Joe crushed the aid to the top.
  • (Oct 07, 2015) Lurking Fear, El Capitan Southwest Face. Brandon Adams, Gena Wood 15hours
5 hours to Pillar. Stellar times on the big stone with a radically fun partner.

  • (Oct 2015) The Prow, Washington Column East Face. dan moses, Willie 1 day
Its a cold night on top if you don't bring a sleeping bag....
  • (Oct 2015) Sea of Dreams, El Capitan Southeast Face. Paul Gagner, Steve "Shipoopi" Schneider 11 days
Killer Route. 3-Day storm, but climbed through two of them and took a rest day on the third.
  • (Oct 2015) Never Never Land, El Capitan Southwest Face. Ian McEleney, Ryan H. 4 days
  • (Oct 2015) Skull Queen, Washington Column South Face. David Brendgard, Solo (solo) 3 days
Great route after leaving the crowds of the S.Face. Exciting exit move onto the rivet/bolt ladder on the route proper. The tree haul went better than I thought. The wide pitch took a big cam and bat hook. The whole route was enjoyable. I used a #3 beak hand placed twice, other than that standard gear rack. There are loose flakes on the pitch above Clance Stance, beware! the last pitch was awesome!
  • (Sep 26, 2015) , . Brandon Adams
  • (Sep 26, 2015) Waterfall Route, El Capitan Southeast Face. Brandon Adams, Matt, Kyle, Kaleb
How to sum it up... Re-established and reconnected the route. Really fun climbing. Repaired old or destroyed hardware, new pitch through rock scar. Great times and high adventure seemingly stepping back 40 years on El Cap.
  • (Sep 05, 2015) Lurking Fear, El Capitan Southwest Face. Keiko Tanaka (solo) 7 days
First successful wall! First route solo! First party on a wall :)
  • (Sep 04, 2015) Lurking Fear, El Capitan Southwest Face. Erik Sloan, Jon Griffin, Shayna Brown, Robbie Brown 11hours
(topo update: we had time to add a couple belay bolts, so now Lurking Fear, the easiest route on El Cap, has all bolted anchors((we added a bolt to belays 14 and 16)) like every other route on El Cap. 'Bout Time!). Keiko was up solo, going for her first successful bigwall, so we Valley Rally-ed and met her at Thanksgiving Ledge after a late morning start. British Ace Neil and Grizzly Joe had done NNL and met up with K right before we got there. Rager on Thanksgiving! So cool to high five Keiko and make sure she had enough reserve stoke to drag all her stuff up the summit slabs. We topped out late after much revelry, and enjoyed the stars. Venus + Mars rising over Half Dome in the early am gave a sparkly Woot!
  • (Sep 04, 2015) Zodiac, El Capitan Southeast Face. Jacques Lepesant (solo) 4.5 days
  • (Sep 2015) Never Never Land, El Capitan Southwest Face. Neil Chelton, Joe Shultz 9 days
Our mega-stereo system weighed even more than our 24 case of beer. Still it was good to blast Michael Jackson tunes at full volume for hours every night. There is no longer a missing bolt on pitch 16. Beware of barnacles.
  • (Sep 2015) Pacific Ocean Wall, El Capitan Southeast Face. Neil Chelton, Callum 7 days
Some lower pitches have poor anchors. Link 4+5, and 6+7 to avoid them. There is only one pendulum on pitch 4. Rivets are fairly poor throughout the route, but all are still useable. Bring a few cinch-style wire hangers and be prepared to replace rivets. It seems like there is a missing rivet on pitch 23. It is possible to hook and head past this. Save some small cams/nuts for the pitch 25 belay. Island in the Sky is an awesome ledge!
  • (Sep 2015) West Face, Leaning Tower. sean warren, Laura ashley 3 days
  • (Sep 2015) Skull Queen, Washington Column South Face. sean warren, Laura ashley 2 days
  • (Aug 21, 2015) Southwest Face, Liberty Cap . Brandon Adams, Thomas Povey 1 day
Thomas's first wall. Fixed one then blasted next morning. Topped out in afternoon. Great adventurous route. Bottom half is rad, top half has some sick and fun chimneys, but is quite traversy and manzanitay. Great times up there with Povey!
  • (Aug 20, 2015) Zodiac, El Capitan Southeast Face. Erik Sloan, Robbie Brown, Nick, Chris Edmands, Oliver 1 day
Party Wall up the best route on the Southeast Face! Woohoo! Topo Updates: Pitch 5: 3 x 3 ledge is missing! Pitch 11: The first hooks after the C2+ section appear to have broken and are barely there.

  • (Jun 20, 2015) Muir Wall, El Capitan Southwest Face. Ryan Strickland, Ben 6 days
We spent 5 nights on the wall moving at a casual pace, quitting at around 4 or 5 pm every day. Not too much fixed gear on the route, which was cool. Mental crux was definitely P26; don't fall here! I nailed one #3 LA on the C4 pitch; it was the only nailing we did on the route. We did not need or place any angles, micro cam hooks, or the largest cam hook. Definitely bring the beaks. Lots of offset cams will make most tricky sections go quick. Micro nuts weren't necessary. Hauling the lower half of the route sucks... I'd recommend a 40'-50' lower out line. There are more bolts at the "gear" anchors than indicated on topos. If I remember right, there were only 2 all gear anchors on route, plus one on the summit.
  • (Jun 19, 2015) The Nose, El Capitan The Nose. Will Masterman, Hans Florine, James Williams 14hours

There are some updates to the topo regarding pitch lengths. Most of these updates are not necessarily mandatory, except pitches 24 and 25, which were way off. Pitch 1: 100 feet. Pitch4: only one pendulum. 60 feet. link pitch 4-5 with 60 meter ropes. Pitch 8: 60 feet. Pitch 11: 130 feet. Pitch 12, 50 feet. You can make one haul from pitch 10 to 12. Leave bags on continental shelf, and haul directly to 12. Pitch 14: 120 feet Link pitch 15 &16 185 feet. Pitch 18: 185 feet. Pitch 20: first section is 5.6, and not run out at all. There is good gear all over the pitch. Pitch 21: 170 feet Pitch 22: the first section is C1+ expanding, not C4 A3. All bomber cams. Pitch 24 is only 70 feet. also, the corner just below the belay is right facing, not left facing. This pitch caused quite a bit of confusion. It is also pretty much all free at 5.9. Pitch 25 is 185 feet. Loose and chossy free climbing, and not a sweet hand crack. That was also confusing. Pitch 26 is is all easy C1 to the summit. Or easy 5.9 or 5.10 free climbing the whole pitch. The rivets are in ok condition. There is a broken rivet on pitch 23 that must be replaced. We used a cheater stick to pass it because I didn't bring a drill.

  • (Nov 18, 2014) Skull Queen, Washington Column South Face. Adam Freund (solo) 09h:36mins
Started at based of P1 at 8:29am. Reached P11 tree anchor (for the second time), with all the gear and rope, at 6:04pm. Traditional rope-soloed every pitch with Silent Partner and backup knots. Linked 2&3, 6&7, 9&10 with a 70m rope. After reaching top, rappelled back to the base and hiked out (I carried a second rope for rappelling). Car-to-car time was 13 hr 23 min (7:15am to 8:38pm) from the Ahwahnee parking lot. Had a blast and felt like I was taking my time. Type 1 fun all day.

Reached top just after 6pm day 2 and then rappelled back to dinner ledge for another two days of chilling, exploring, and getting in some practice on the lower pitches of Southern Man and South Face. Sweet ledges. Lots of bold mice. Adam led, Gina seconded like a pro. She discovered that cutting loose and swinging rather than lowering out is both more fun and quicker, and proceeded to do it throughout the climb.

Day 3 took us to El Cap Spire and Fixed the first pitch off the the spire. On Day 3 we lead up to Long Ledge for a glorious night before our top out on Thursday, November 6, 2014

  • (Oct 29, 2014) The Nose, El Capitan The Nose. Adam Freund, Gina Edwards 2 days 11h:51mins
Had a blast! Day 1: Started @ 5:12am with the haulbag at the start of the route (didn't fix beforehand). Made it to Dolt Tower by 3?pm (our planned first night) and decided to continue to Eagle Ledge. Opted to take the Jardine Traverse. Arrived at Eagle Ledge in the dark. It was smaller than we had hoped for. Day 2: Started climbing in daylight and then let Mayan Smith-Gobat and Libby Sauter pass, while going for what would become the new woman's speed record (which they broke again a few days later). We had to wait for them to pass a whole 2 minutes! Pretty cool to watch. Made it to Camp V before dark and had a super comfortable night there. Day 3: Started climbing in daylight and topped out at the tree with Gina, the pig and the ropes and 5:03pm, a day earlier than we had planned. Notes: -Didn't place a single nut! -No hooks or camhooks used except for one unneeded grappling hook placement on the Jardine Traverse, where I should have free climbed. -Adam lead and hauled every pitch, while Gina speed-seconded like a seasoned pro, while carrying extra water for the first two days to make hauling easier. -Rack: 3x .1 to #2 Camalots, 2x #3 and #4, 1x 000 C3. 1x each X4 offset. This rack worked perfectly and I never desired to have more of a certain size, and used every cam at least once. Could definitely be safely done with less gear, but this rack made it very comfortable. Led with a 70m 10.1 and hauled with a 60m 10.1.

  • (Oct 15, 2014) West Face, Leaning Tower. David Brendgard, Solo (solo) 2.5 days
Great climb. Soloing it was fun, lots of free hanging raps back to the bags. I linked 3&4 easily, I did Eric's pitches and it worked out great with a 60. Pitch 3 was the crux for me. Loved the roof on 6. I bivied on Ahwahnee and Dano. If you have the time; stay on Dano for your second night. Its a cool and spacious ledge at the top, I had a solo part-ay, up there with the 1 liter of wine I brought along. Why not, eh? There is really only one way to descend, down the gulley. The last rap anchor is near the tree on the South side of the gulley. Climb it yo.

As of 8/29/2014, all bolted anchors are solid. All gear/piton anchors are still gear/piton anchors, as shown on the topo. Most of the bolt ladders have at least one or two solid bolts (with the exception of the ladder on P8). Thanks to Roger and ASCA for providing hardware and advice! Also thanks to Erik for showing us how to use a hand drill! We placed 13 anchor bolts, 5 lead bolts, and one rivet. All lead bolts were 1-for-1 replacements of existing [sketchy] lead bolts. Anchors were cleaned up and are generally one bomber ASCA, plus one or two more moderate to good bolts. We wouldn't recommend going up there without a bolt/rivet kit, because there are still a number of rivets/bolts that could blow in awkward spots. (P13 has some sketchy hardware that could warrant replacement.) In general, the climbing is fun and adventurous with occasional loose rock, exceptional position, and good times to be had! If you want more beta, feel free to find shoot me a line.

Solo FA. Broke over eight 1/4" drill bits and two 3/8" drill bits. Bullet stone up there. Lots of thin beaking and splitter corner/flake systems. Too many rivets due to features not showing up like they looked like from the road and below for a pitch but otherwise, great climbing on one of the more obvious features you stare at while on the East Face of El Cap! I listened to the Game of Thrones audiobooks the entire time I was up there (books 1-3) so most feature names are based upon that text.

FA of Horns of Jericho (direct). Dirty (exfoliating) crack systems that will clean up once it gets a few ascents. This start doubles the amount of nailing you'll encounter on Jericho, primarily beaks and arrows and avoids the long traversing approach of Jericho's first 3 pitches. Belay 2 is one 3/8" and two 1/4" bolts. Feel free to replace one of the 1/4" bolts with 3/8" if you're feeling randy. Second Ascent of Jericho Loosed a few blocks and cleaned up many of the ledges. Still some loose blocks and sharp edges. Notes: - Hauling to pitch 2 from the ground requires a 70m rope (or approx 225') - "Belay for 50" ledge has few comfortable spots, if bringing portaledges, belay 6 is much better. - When leaving roof on pitch 6 be very careful not to get rope pinched in the corner or rope drag will be prohibitive. Mistakes on topo: - It is a two rope rap from the summit to the 10th belay, not a single rope rap. - You may not be able to do a two rope rap from 8 to 6 (We had a 200' static that came up 15' short. Depending on stretch, two 60m dynamics may differ. - No angles or blades or #3 heads needed on the rack. 7 days with fixing 3 and the descent. My first El Cap route. Fixing to three was key. The window pain is fun, don't bypass unless you are truly freeing that version. I had a team of two pass me on the top of five and had the route to myself from then to Thanksgiving when Clark Jacob and Dave Brennon caught up to me. The run out was big! I had 2 #4 Camalots and leapfrogged the entire length of it. Just Zen out and don't think about the fall potential. The gear is good. I hooked the Grad Traverse and it had a big reach on it, maybe 3-5 hook in a row. Took a fall on the Neds Mantle pitch in the flare after the 'easier' way. The three pitches leading to thanksgiving were the worst for leading and hauling. The top out was long and aggravating to the summit. Overall, just what everyone says. The first 12-13 pitches are great splitters C1, C2 awesome climbing and excellent setting. The last third of the route in poor quality, sucky hauling and bush whacking to the summit. I walked off and had to ferry loads. Clark Jacob walked off with me and we talked history for 11 hours. Have Fun.

Stellar solo climb, every belay is hanging so if climbing with a partner it would be more comfortable to flag the ledge for the belayer to sit/stand on. VERY windy, ropebags are a must. Starts up around noon and blows hard until late afternoon. Still some loose blocks and though most cracks are clean, when there's munge, there's rainforests of munge and grass. Prepare yourself for battle.

Route went clean easily for us, but we still heard parties nailing below us while we were still on the route. Later heard more parties nailing while I was Soloing New Dawn to Tribal Rite. Great times though. Flagging a ledge is the best way to keep every belay cushy and comfortable.
  • (Jun 04, 2013) Freerider, El Capitan Southwest Face. Jessie Tan, Doug McGraw, Khristian Lukianov 6 days
First big wall supporting Doug on the Freerider!! Climbed 25/35 pitches and jugged the rest, amazing first time on the wall. Freeblasted then stayed the night in the Valley, hauled to the Heart then stayed on Lung Ledge, 2 nights in the Alcove, one on the Block, one night on Round Table ledge, then pushed to the summit. 5 nights and 6 days. Just the beginning :)

First time walling with Ezra and Mucci. (Hooray!) First time out after GF left me. (Booo) Great route, with some awkward that is fun (if you like that sort of thing) and some nailing that isn't blown out yet, We weekend warrior'd the route, fixing Jan 19th weekend and firing Feb 2nd weekend.
  • (Jan 2013) Laughing at the Void, Ribbon Fall. josh mucci, Cobbledik, Ezra Allee 2 days
January ascent with a bivy on the ledge! Very mellow nailing, P5 is sustainable from the looks of it with many micro cams and med and large beaks. Nut placements are now showing up in the arrow size crack. Cam hooks ahoy! Jerry did a great job finding a nice romp up there. Missed finishing on the variation, next time.

  • (Oct 2012) Bad Moon Rising, Liberty Cap . josh mucci, Steve Bosque, Ezra Allee
Steve, Ezra and I spent 6 days after fixing 4 pitches on the FA. Early oct brought a heat wave, high 90's ALL DAY LONG. Jesus it was hot. 17.5 gallons of water, we finished with less than a quart. Perfect. Very mellow climbing, with some mandatory nailing here and there. The rivets on the P6 roof have the wire hangers smashed tight. I drilled 2 of them too deep in my heat induced state. I plan on fixing them soon. Pretty classic corner.

Pitch 5 heads/beaks section and roof splitter crack was completely clean of fixed gear and so had to place everything myself which was slightly more committing than I expected. Good mental training.
  • (Feb 11, 2012) Direct Northwest Face, Porcelain Wall. Erik Sloan, Richie Copeland
What an amazingly dry winter to start 2012. We took four months to climb this route, but Richie lives 3.5 hrs from the Valley and the approach always took some time. The full shade made for perfect moving temperatures, and the puffy kept us warm at the belays. In winter this baby gets about one hour of Sun just on the top few pitches of the climb. Outrageous steepness!...and blankness. We joined the (chopped) Harding route for the upper blankness.Porcelain!

My first solo wall. It was fantastic! gear on p.3 is pretty tricky... esp. if you don't have peckers (I think that's what they're called). the fixed heads i encountered weren't all that fixed as well. But super fun route with amazing exposure!
  • (Apr 23, 2011) Wet Denin Daydream, Leaning Tower. Erik Sloan, Ryan Baker, Richie Copeland 2 days
Awesome climb o steepness! Ahwahnee Ledge is so bitchin. The heads on the first Wet Denim pitch are very thin and tend to come out from the weight of the cleaner, so I think that pitch is A4 if you're not clipping the free climbing bolts. What a natural line, so cool. Team Juicy Fruit woot.
  • (Apr 01, 2011) Laughing at the Void, Ribbon Fall. Erik Sloan, Ryan Baker 2 days
The Valley was still filled with snow but the wall was baking hot glorious. Fun, mellow warmup wall. The view from that ledge is so sick good. Ryan and I continued up the arete from the ledge, establishing two new 120' pitches(A2+,A2) before leading a short 5.5 pitch that connected into the gully of Thin Line for one short pitch to the base of the last pitch of Gold Wall, which we climbed to the summit. Wooohooo!

  • (Aug 2010) Never Never Land, El Capitan Southwest Face. Ben Lepesant, Jacques Lepesant 4 days
on pitch 12 the free rating of 5.9 did not seem correct. at least, not right after the penji. also on pitch 18 there is a pretty scary loose block. in 2010 it seemed quite close to coming out. you have to move around it. Still I think this pitch is mor like A2. it's not where it says loose on the topo, but where it says A3 for the first time,at that nose. this topo is much better than the supertopo one.

It was a hot 97 degrees, but we started early and had a blast. We pasted three Koreans on top of Texas Flake who had ropes and a leader up higher at Eagle Ledge. Before we topped out we heard a big rockfall from the Nose and heard people screaming. When we got down we found out the Korean leader had pulled off a large flake that you used to climb up at the beginning of the pitch to Camp 4--was a six foot tall flake that was stuck in the crack and you climbed on it. Guess it broke the fella's leg and almost cut his rope but he was able to be rescued as was the rest of the team the next day.

Steve and I spent a few days fixing 4, and then 5 on the FA. Very splitter in the white scar, not anything loose of consequence. Very natural climbing, mostly clean, especially with micro cams. The first pitch is probably the crux nailing pitch as P8 is tame with a couple of beaks. More like A2. Hauling the last 4-5 pitches looks improbably, but we did it twice without incident..

Solo in 3 days. Took a ledge, Fish One Night Stand. I took 9L of water and ran out the last day. The route was easy with a couple tricky section, I think pitch 3 was the hardest for me. I went strait up and did not do the belly crawl, with a couple of big cams you can aid the OW. However, because I was so hot and thirsty I did detour into the belly crawl to get some shade and moisture then went back out onto the OW. The views from the top are great of Half Dome. The descent was....shitty. I was scared of the 4th class traverse and shuttled load across, I should have fixed a line. I found water on top which saved my butt on the descent. Great route for a Grade V.

Everyone has to start somewhere. We did everything wrong; our hauling was so backwards, some unnecessary long leads, sooo much cluster f@#%, and as we finished the climb Katie and Lynn came free climbing from behind. The whole thing was mind blowing. We finally got back to the car in the dark and I was so stoked. The problem was I did'nt know what I was stoked on?

First one day ascent. I'm pretty sure this was Dave's first El Cap route. Jaimie was raging strong. We bivied at the base and I went to bed early, worried that I was out of shape while the boys drank the night away. Coiler walked by the base in the morning and I called down and he said it was 10am when we were at pitch 4, so I was psyched. Jaimie led most of route after that;I led the first four and 9,10 but didn't have much night endurance then. I had dreamed of a Summit Solo and the boys consented so we trailed the ropes and climbed together the last pitch--the only reason we made it in a day as Jaimie had climbed all night while Dave and I bitched(about the cold) and slept.... Sweet times with the Summer bros!

So much fun on the Southwest Face. Pretty cool and straightforward route for not being that popular. The splitter pitches on the headwall are sick! We hit a heat wave and were pretty cooked by the top but met up with Holly and friend on Thanksgiving Ledge(they had climbed Lurking Fear) and all had a fun night hiking over to the top of the Nose and bivying there. Awesome times--Thank you Le Cap.

Big Sandy in about seven hours, and then there was a party ahead of us. We weren't in a hurry, so we stayed behind them until Thank God Ledge. Topped out and ran down to the base to get stashed gear. Theresa didn't want to do the Death Slabs b/c it was starting to get dark, so humped back up to the shoulder and down the trail. Brutal. We actually just crashed out and slept for a bit right on the trail.

Summer climb with perfect, breezy 70 degree weather on the Shield headwall. We replaced most of the lead and anchor bolts. Weird vibe when we blasted as there was a fatality in the Valley the day before when a rope-soloist fell on Braille Book and was killed when the rescue helicopter had trouble getting out of the Spire Gully and ended up ramming the litter through some trees. The empty helicopter was sitting in the meadow of the El Cap meadow and the place was crawling with burly men asking, 'did you see anything yesterday' as they were investigating the helicopter pilot. Good times for us though, mellow cruising up golden bliss.

Jamie separated his shoulder slipping on the approach with a full haulbag and had to bail; Patrick was up to solo Zodiac and jumped on as we already had the full three-person rig hauled to the top of pitch 1. So much fun dangling up there. Josh aided the 5.10 section, via a a couple pins and hooks up and right off the belay, after neither of us could get started with the free shoes on; the 'beeferoni' variation is A3,hahahha. Spring on the southeast face....good times!

Took all season. Fixed ropes to belay 8 ( Cool Flare ) and rapped route. Spent as much time hangin in the ledges swilling and partying as we did climbing. mostly shallow flared and thin cracks. A cool 14ft nob lasso move. No hole count, 2 many. I placed 2 chicken bolts on the dissapearing corner pitch ( A4 if you don't clip ) All heads left fixed. Bomber belays. Most take 2 ledges. Lead bolts are 5/16 and ocasional 3/8. Rivets are 3/8 x 1 1/4 some a little work hardened. (Except for a half dozen 1/4inchers at the start of the Sua Sponte pitch). Rambo really wanted to use those 1/4'rs. Crazy hard drilling. Cool rock, great out of the way spot. No carrying water!!

Mikey Schafer, Pete Zabroc and I climbed to Mammoth Terraces in a bid to do this route in a day; we brought no storm gear, just a bag with food and water and one puffy jacket each. When we got to Mammoth, in 8 hours(we we're naively hoping to get there in 4) I had a weird feeling that that was not the day for me. I was seeing a local girl at the time who I was really into, and we had plans for the next day and it didn't look like we were going to finish the route in time. Mike and Pete gave me a hard time but I wasn't feeling it. I offered to descend the fixed lines so they could push on but the team disintegrated and we rapped. That night an unforecasted storm rolled in dumping cold rain for hours. Mikey still laughs about how that girlfriend saved our lives. Mikey and Pete took off so I recruited Nick to finish the climb with me, again naively thinking I could lead from Mammoth to the top in a day. We jugged up on a hot, sweaty night and I started leading at 5am. At 10pm, having led primarily short-fixing the entire time, we pulled up on Chickedhead Ledge and crashed. Topped out mid-morning the next day.

We did this route in 3 days with no fixing, and felt like we were moving pretty good using the continuous leader three man system until on the second day we watched Timmy and Miles climb the NA in 9.5 hours--it looked like they were levitating up the route to the thumping techno music on their stereo. Then we didn't think we were going so fast, hahahhaa. Spaz almost chopped the cleaner twice by fixing the lead line over crazy sharp edges....Ahhh, so much fun up there.

First wall, we hauled, not as bad hauling as everyone makes it out to be. Lots of free in the 5.10 range. Big Sandy is so great, awesome views of the valley. We took the trail in and out, big pain! Loved the route and the history, can't beat the location. In '99 we could have gone with one set cams and one set stoppers, many fixed pieces. I was glad I had a big cam on the 5.7 entry to the chimneys! Thank God Ledge was a blast. Spent the night on top to wake up to excellent sunrise over the High Sierra.

  • (Sep 1996) Aquarian Wall, El Capitan Southwest Face. Erik Sloan, John All 4 days
We climbed during a heatwave, with 100 degree temps. On the third day John got heat exhaustion bad, and I struggled to get him coherent forcing him to drink all but a liter of our water supply. The next day we tried to make it to Thanksgiving before the Sun hit us at noon. We ended up on a ledge just below Thanksgiving, and made a shade with our rainfly, drank the salty water from our canned salmon. That night I led up to Thanksgiving and we traversed over and met up with some Lurking Fear climbers. They happily traded us two liters of water for a couple 24 oz Shlitz malt liquor cans we were lugging around. How cruel it had felt to have something water-like, beer, and not be able to drink it. After drinking the water and sharing a can of fruit cocktail that we felt better enough to try sharing a beer, but instantly felt sick and ended up pouring it out. Adventure!

Thankfully, the Ranch's hardest pitches occur ever other pitch so Chris led the 'odds' and got the hard leads.

I'll always remember rolling into the Valley during a warm, high-pressure window and spending a few days alone on the Tower. There was no snow. The mellowness of the climbing and the deep quiet and stillness of that time of year was very magical. You'll never forget talking to the tourists in the parking lot after your first solo. 'You climbed that(!)?'
  • (Oct 1995) Dante's Inferno, Yosemite Falls Wall. Erik Sloan, Rob Dillon 4 days
Fun, mellow climb. I led this A2 pitch in the middle that was really dirty, and got dirt in my eyes so bad it caused them to water incessantly making me nearly blind. After the lead, I struggled to get my ledges set up before dark, when the hurricane-force winds crank across the wall. Somehow I managed to get the ledge set up but had it clipped into my daisy, which was tied through my harness. Exhausted, I just lay there all night not able to shut my sleeping bag, or see more than a blurry mess. By morning my vision was better....ahh, the struggles of the beginning wall climber. Beautiful views o Yosemite Falls there, and a remote feel.

My first Wall. First climb longer than a grade IV for my partner. Triple cracks was 5th aid pitch I'd ever led. Dropped 2nd rope from beneath shield roof. Tied lead and 9mm static togeather and rapped down to grey. Couldn't quite reach grey. swung to within 6 inches or so from the wall and let go with my brake hand. dropped about a foot or so. Feet on a good shelf hands on a sloper. freaking scary, but got the extra lead line. Good thing. Main one got caught on a flake. Had to cut it to salvage what we could. Windy as hell a couple of days on the headwall. No rope bags and too dumb to stack the ropes at the anchors. Ran out of everything at the end. But had a Killer time

Slow but sure, my first wall solo in the Valley. Post-holed through the snow, packing loads, then launched on a Marvelous 3 day Adventure. It was the first of manyAdventures for the 1985 Valley Season. I stayed on the walls in the Valley from April through November. Nine El Cap routes for me that Season. It was a season that I will hold with me until my last breath, and then some. Blessed are those who Live out their Dreams...
